Barossa
The Barossa Valley wine region covers 13,256 hectares, divided among 755 growers. It is primarily planted with Syrah, known as Shiraz in Australia because its aromatic characteristics differ significantly from those of the Rhône variety.
The Barossa is one of the oldest wine regions in the world. The first vineyards were established in the region in 1842, and some of them are still in operation today. In this context, and to highlight the Barossa’s wine heritage, local winemakers have created a classification of the oldest vines still in production:
> 35 years: Barossa Old Vine
> 70 years: Barossa Survivor Vine
> 100 years: Barossa Centenarian Vine
> 125 years: Barossa Ancestor Vine
Like other wine-growing regions in South Australia, the Barossa Valley’s vines are pre-phylloxera, meaning they were never affected by the pest and therefore were not grafted to resist it.
The Barossa wine region is divided into two valleys: Barossa Valley and Eden Valley.
