Barossa
The Barossa vineyard covers 13,256 hectares divided among 755 growers. It is mainly planted with Syrah, known as Shiraz in Australia because its aromatic characteristics differ significantly from the Rhône variety.
Barossa is one of the oldest wine-growing regions in the world. The first vineyards were established in the region in 1842, and some of them are still in operation today. In order to promote Barossa's wine-growing heritage, winegrowers have initiated a classification system for the oldest vines still in production:
> 35 years: Barossa Old Vine
> 70 years: Barossa Survivor Vine
> 100 years: Barossa Centenarian Vine
> 125 years: Barossa Ancestor Vine
Like other wine-growing regions in South Australia, the Barossa vineyards are pre-phylloxera, meaning that they were never affected by the parasite and therefore did not need to be grafted to resist it.
The Barossa wine region is divided into two valleys: Barossa Valley and Eden Valley.
