Bierzo
The Bierzo Designation of Origin is located in the northeastern part of the province of León. The Bierzo DO (Denominación de Origen), granted as recently as 1989, covers vineyards in 22 municipalities. Today, vineyards cover an area of approximately 6,500 hectares. The Bierzo production area is divided into numerous small valleys in the mountainous region (Alto Bierzo) and a broad plain (Bajo Bierzo).

The Bierzo vineyards are planted on soils composed of a mixture of quartz and schist and benefit from the region’s characteristic warm, dry climate. The low altitude prevents late frosts and promotes early grape ripening. These local characteristics allow the vines to thrive. The quality of the Bierzo terroir is perfectly expressed in the wines offered by Bodega Mengoba or Bodegas de Cacabelos.

Bierzo wines are produced according to strict regulations. Bierzo red wines are primarily made from the Mencia and Garnacha Tintorera grape varieties, while Bierzo white wines are crafted from the Doña Blanca, Godello, and Palomino grape varieties.
