Bierzo

The Bierzo Designation of Origin is located in the northeastern part of the province of León. The Bierzo DO (Denominación de Origen), granted as recently as 1989, covers vineyards in 22 municipalities. Vineyards currently cover an area of approximately 6,500 hectares. The Bierzo production area is divided into numerous small valleys in the mountainous region (Alto Bierzo) and a broad plain (Bajo Bierzo).

The Bierzo vineyards are planted on soils composed of a mixture of quartz and schist and benefit from the region’s characteristic warm, dry climate. The low altitude prevents late frosts and promotes early ripening of the grapes. These local characteristics allow the vines to thrive. The quality of the terroir of Bierzo wines is perfectly expressed in the vintages offered by Bodega Mengoba and Bodegas de Cacabelos.

Bierzo wines are produced in accordance with strict regulations. Bierzo red wines are primarily made from the Mencia and Garnacha Tintorera grape varieties, while Bierzo white wines are made from the Doña Blanca, Godello, and Palomino grape varieties.
