“What a burst of flavors in this vibrant cuvée!”

"This blend is made up of equal parts Carignan, Syrah, and Grenache, with aromas of leather, pepper, and red fruits soaked in brandy. On the palate, it is full-bodied, generous, and round, infused with ripe fruit and licorice, and supported by fine tannins that linger on the finish." (Le Guide Hachette 2023)

About the wine:

This blend is made up of equal parts Carignan, Syrah, and Grenache, with aromas of leather, pepper, and red berries soaked in brandy. On the palate, it is full-bodied, generous, and round, infused with ripe fruit and licorice, and supported by fine tannins that linger on the finish.

About the estate:

The estate’s origins, spanning six generations, date back to 1864. The property boasts a 25-hectare vineyard spread across diverse terroirs. At the helm since 1989, Pierre and Marie-Claude Fontaneil have been producing wines with strong character for nearly 30 years, including both dry and naturally sweet wines. In 2017, they sold the estate to a young couple of winemakers, Élodie and Matthieu Collet.

About the wine:

A dense core with a purplish hue. Pure and aromatic, with notes of pepper and dried spices combined with ripe wild berries and plums. On the palate, it displays maturity and density yet remains medium-bodied and easy to drink, with a pleasant sense of freshness, a rounded body, and a long, flavorful finish.

A striking purple color with a ruby rim. On the nose: dark fruit, pepper, green herbs, and some reductive notes. On the palate, too, there are dark notes: dark fruit, slightly cooked and reductive, peppery, inky, earthy, and with hints of lovage. Soft tannins, licorice, concentration, power, and masculine impressions. It will pair well with spicy stews. Still quite compact. Needs some aeration; then it becomes a bit friendlier/more open. Score: 15.5/20

Very well made, with great aromas and a long finish; it might be a 5 by the time I open the next bottle.

Power, opulence, and elegance all come together on the palate, along with a juicy, rich body that blends red fruits, sweet spices, and a hint of zest, supported by a tannic structure with restrained power that lingers into a long, silky finish, full of subtle freshness. A wine that, even in its youth, shows great aging potential. Its robust character, combined with a lovely roundness, already came into its own when paired with pan-fried Catalan pork ribs and chorizo piperade. Rating = 4.
