Robert Parker

Élodie and Matthieu Collet have taken over from Pierre and Marie-Claude Fontaneil in fine style, producing wines that have lost none of their character. Here, they offer superb vinification in vats of Grenache Noir and Mourvèdre. Brilliant, with its intense purple color, this 2016 has a seductive nose of redcurrant, blueberry, and pepper, evolving towards toasted notes and leather. The palate is rich, full-bodied and flavorful, underpinned by powerful yet velvety tannins with a fine, elegant texture. Great aging potential ahead." (Le Guide Hachette des Vins 2019)

About the estate:

The origins of the estate, which has been passed down through six generations, date back to 1864. The property boasts a 25-hectare vineyard planted on a variety of terroirs. At the helm since 1989, Pierre and Marie-Claude Fontaneil have been producing wines with strong personalities for nearly 30 years, including both dry wines and naturally sweet wines. In 2017, they sold the estate to a young couple of winemakers, Élodie and Matthieu Collet.

Wine rating (2019 guide) 90/100 (Outstanding wine)

About wine:

This Maury Sec 2016 is a blend of Grenache (80%) and Mourvèdre (20%), aged in vats. It is no longer a simple fruit-forward wine. It is full of black fruits with a hint of raspberry, but also subtle spicy notes and dark chocolate. This wine is full-bodied and ripe with supple tannins, ready to enjoy now.

Tasted in 2021, decent but barely deserves 90 out of 100 (more like 87-88 in my opinion), definitely needs more aging. Honestly not worth the asking price (16 euros). There are better options on the site at this price point and/or cheaper (10-12 max) for similar enjoyment.

Opulent and sappy on the palate, offering flavors of black fruits (blueberries, blackberries, prunes, etc.) with smooth, silky tannins. Short finish. It's a shame that the price seems overpriced, as is unfortunately the case with many wines from Languedoc or Roussillon.

A little disappointing when first opened, but won me over the next day with its developed aromas. The wine gains depth and blossoms into a beautiful finish. And even better the day after that! Should improve with age.
