“Élodie and Matthieu Collet have taken over from Pierre and Marie-Claude Fontaneil in fine style and produce wines that have lost none of their character. Here, they offer a superb tank-fermented blend of Grenache Noir and Mourvèdre. Brilliant in its intense purple hue, this 2016 vintage boasts a devilishly seductive nose of red currant, blueberry, and pepper, evolving toward notes of toast and leather. On the palate, it is rich, full-bodied, and flavorful, supported by a powerful yet velvety tannic structure with a fine, elegant texture. It shows great aging potential.” (Le Guide Hachette des Vins 2019)

About the estate:
The estate’s origins, spanning six generations, date back to 1864. The property boasts a 25-hectare vineyard spread across diverse terroirs. At the helm since 1989, Pierre and Marie-Claude Fontaneil have been producing wines with strong character for nearly 30 years, including both dry and naturally sweet wines. In 2017, they sold the estate to a young couple of winemakers, Élodie and Matthieu Collet.

Wine rated (2019 guide) 90/100 (Excellent wine)
About the wine:
This 2016 Maury Sec is a blend of Grenache (80%) and Mourvèdre (20%), aged in tanks. It is no longer just a simple, fruit-forward wine. It is full of black fruit with a hint of raspberry, as well as subtle spicy notes and dark chocolate. This wine is full-bodied and ripe with supple tannins, ready to enjoy now.

Tasted in 2021; decent, but barely deserves a 90 out of 100 (more like 87–88 in my opinion); it probably needs more time to age. Honestly, it’s not worth the asking price (16 euros). There are better options on the site at that price and/or cheaper ones (10–12 euros max) that offer a similar experience.

A rich, luscious palate, offering flavors of dark fruits (blueberries, blackberries, prunes, etc.) supported by smooth, silky tannins. Short finish. It’s a shame that the price seems inflated, as is unfortunately the case with many wines from the Languedoc or Roussillon.

I was a little disappointed when I first opened it, but the next day I was won over by the aromas that had developed. The wine gains depth and unfolds into a lovely finish. And it’s even better the day after that! It should improve with age.
