Lalande-de-Pomerol: Aroma and Authenticity

The Lalande-de-Pomerol Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée (AOC) is a municipal appellation within the Bordeaux wine region, located about 50 kilometers east of Bordeaux, just north of the town of Libourne. The vineyards are arranged in successive terraces and span two municipalities: Lalande-de-Pomerol and Néac. The appellation is separated from its neighbor, Pomerol, by the Barbanne River. The Lalande-de-Pomerol vineyard covers an area of 1,130 hectares, yielding an annual production of approximately 50,000 hectoliters of wine.

The Lalande-de-Pomerol Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée (AOC) was granted on December 8, 1936, and benefits from a prime geographical location.

Lalande-de-Pomerol: an Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée (AOC) that guarantees high quality

The vineyards of the Lalande-de-Pomerol appellation are situated on a terroir whose soils consist of a mixture of clay (very deep in some areas), gravel, and even sand in the western part, near the Barbanne River. The nature of these soils is perfectly suited to Merlot, which makes up the majority of the vineyard’s grape varieties.

The Lalande-de-Pomerol appellation produces red wines made almost exclusively from the Merlot grape variety, most often blended with Cabernet Franc and, to a lesser extent, with Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec. Lalande-de-Pomerol wines display a deep ruby-garnet color; they are very expressive, characterized by red berries (red currant, strawberry, cherry, raspberry, etc.), complemented by aromas of vanilla, toast, and spices. Separated from the town of Pomerol by the Barbanne River, the Lalande-de-Pomerol AOC is characterized by a deep red color, synonymous with wines that are as powerful as they are aromatic. The attack is always clean, and the palate is solid, full-bodied, and ample, with tannins that are prominent but never harsh, eventually becoming velvety. Lalande-de-Pomerol wines have an aging potential of 10 years or more.
The Merlot grape variety is by far the dominant component in Lalande-de-Pomerol blends, lending these wines their roundness and finesse. Although these wines are very similar to those of Pomerol, they have their own distinct identity, particularly since Cabernet Franc provides them with a robust structure, and Cabernet Sauvignon contributes smooth colors and the potential to age under optimal conditions.

The Lalande-de-Pomerol appellation offers some very pleasant surprises, such as the wines from Château Moulin La Gravière, Château La Fleur de Boüard, and Etablissements Thunevin
