Lalande-de-Pomerol: aroma and authenticity

The Lalande-de-Pomerol appellation d'origine contrôlée (AOC) is a communal appellation in the Bordeaux wine region located about 50 kilometers east of Bordeaux, north of the town of Libourne. The vines are arranged in successive terraces and cover two communes: Lalande-de-Pomerol and Néac. The appellation is separated from its neighbor Pomerol by the Barbanne river. The Lalande-de-Pomerol vineyard covers an area of 1,130 hectares, allowing for an annual production of around 50,000 hectoliters of wine.

The Lalande-de-Pomerol appellation d'origine contrôlée (AOC) was obtained on December 8, 1936, and benefits from a privileged geographical location.

Lalande-de-Pomerol: an appellation d'origine contrôlée (AOC) guaranteeing high quality

The vineyards of the Lalande-de-Pomerol appellation are planted on terroir whose soils consist of a mixture of clay (very deep in some areas), gravel, and even sand in the western part, near the Barbanne River. The nature of these soils is perfectly suited to Merlot, which accounts for the majority of the vineyards.

The Lalande-de-Pomerol appellation produces red wines made exclusively from Merlot grapes, most often blended with Cabernet Franc and, to a lesser extent, Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec. Lalande-de-Pomerol wines have a dark ruby-garnet color and are very expressive, marked by small red fruits (redcurrant, strawberry, cherry, raspberry, etc.) with added aromas of vanilla, toast, and spices. Separated from the commune of Pomerol by the Barbanne River, the Lalande-de-Pomerol appellation is defined by a deep red color, synonymous with wines that are as powerful as they are bouquet-rich. The attack is always frank, the palate solid, fleshy, and full-bodied, where the tannins are present but never harsh, becoming velvety. Lalande-de-Pomerol wines have an aging potential of 10 years or more.
Merlot is by far the dominant grape variety in Lalande de Pomerol blends, giving them roundness and finesse. Although these wines are very similar to those of Pomerol, they have their own identity, especially as Cabernet Franc gives them a solid structure and Cabernet Sauvignon gives them a smooth color and the potential to age in optimal storage conditions.

The Lalande-de-Pomerol appellation offers some very pleasant surprises, such as the wines from Château Moulin La Gravière, Château La Fleur de Boüard, and Etablissements Thunevin.
