Established in 1938, theAloxe-Corton and Aloxe-Corton Premier Cru AOC (Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée) serves as a link between the Côtes de Nuits and the Côte de Beaune, of which it is a part. The Montagne de Corton marks a change in the landscape, which becomes more rounded as it extends toward Beaune. Gentle valleys give way to steep slopes. The appellation covers the communes of Aloxe-Corton and Ladoix-Serrigny. It comprises 13 climats classified as Aloxe-Corton Premier Cru—that is, precisely demarcated plots distinguished for the quality of their terroir.

The Montagne de Corton, an iconic site in the Côte de Beaune, features a textbook geological cross-section. At altitudes between 200 and 300 meters, the soils are reddish-brown, containing abundant siliceous nodules, limestone and flint fragments (“chaillots”), or loose material rich in potassium and phosphoric acid. The vineyards of Aloxe-Cortonin Burgundy face from east to west. The northern section produces the most delicate and fruity wines; the southern section yields the most robust and structured wines. The stony soils produce supple, elegant wines; the clayier and marly soils yield firm, complex wines. It is also a very distinctive climate that has shaped this estate over time. Notable for its incredible roof, the estate specializes in Burgundy wines and offers approximately 90 appellations, many of which are AOP.

The grape variety used for Aloxe-Corton and Aloxe-Corton Premier Cru wines is Pinot Noir. White wines, which are very rare in this appellation, are made from Chardonnay. Among the white wines, Domaine Chevalier Père & Fils and Domaine Antonin Guyon stand out in this appellation.

Aloxe Corton Red Wine: Characteristics

The Pinot Noir used for Aloxe Corton red wines benefits from the exceptional terroir of the Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée. Its deep, intense ruby-red color, with purple highlights, is reminiscent of the black and red fruits found on its nose. Aromas of morello cherries, blackberries, and raspberries mingle with springtime floral notes while the wine is still young. With age, the Alex Corton red wine reveals notes of prunes, jam, and cinnamon. 

The palate is equally impressive, with a robust, generous, and well-structured body. Its pleasant tannins pair perfectly with red meat dishes—whether served in a sauce or simply grilled—or with strong, soft cheeses. Aloxe Corton wines are best served between 15 and 16 °C.
