About the wine:
Two vineyard plots in this vintage, which is rich and elegant overall, very well-rounded—a sort of distillation of all the qualities of the great Côte de Nuits wines—though it may still lack just a touch of pure finesse. But let’s give it some time!
About the estate:
From Cazetiers to Bouzeron, this major Beaune wine merchant founded in 1731 owns more than 142 plots across 130 hectares of vineyards, including 73 hectares of Premier Cru and Grand Cru vineyards. This first-rate wine-growing heritage allows Frédéric Weber, a talented winemaker previously in charge of Château de Poncié, to produce approximately 600,000 bottles out of the total three million units produced here each year, with the majority of production coming from purchased grapes for the grand crus and from carefully selected musts for the whites other than those from the estate. Impressive success with both whites and reds in recent vintages.

About the wine:
The 2016 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru comes exclusively from the highest plot in the vineyard, which is bordered by ancient stone walls; the lower plot has been uprooted. It has a fairly powerful bouquet with well-defined aromas of black cherries, bergamot, fresh figs, and raspberry jam. The palate is very well-balanced, with ripe, sensual tannins, good acidity, and a hint of oak that develops on the finish; otherwise, it is an elegant Clos de Vougeot that will rank among the greatest wines. 2020–2040

About the wine:
Medium red. Distinctly berry-like aromas of Boysenberry, violet, and lavender. Both dense and juicy, with sharp yet harmonious berry flavors, beautifully framed and enhanced by pronounced acidity. The finish is firmly tannic but not at all harsh, with a lovely touch of sweetness and a hint of salty minerality. Right now, I much prefer this wine to the Echézeaux. Winemaker Weber told me that he likes to harvest this Clos Vougeot later in the season to achieve softer acidity and riper tannins, but he clarified that he doesn’t find this wine particularly acidic. He did, however, admit that some of these 2016 Côte de Nuits grands crus had alcohol levels nearing 14%.
