Clos de Vougeot

The Clos de Vougeot appellation is a Grand Cru appellation in the Côte de Nuits vineyards in the Côte d'Or. Located in the heart of the Côte de Nuits, Clos de Vougeot occupies a large part of the commune of Vougeot, between Chambolle-Musigny and Flagey-Echezeaux/Vosne-Romanée. Above the Clos, Musigny and Grands-Echezeaux occupy the hillside. The Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru AOC dates back to July 31, 1937.

Founded around 1110 by the nearby Abbey of Cîteaux, which retained ownership until 1789, Clos de Vougeot is the very image of Burgundy. Covering a single 50-hectare plot, it remains surrounded by the walls that enclosed it five centuries ago. Its wine is one of the leading figures among the red grands crus. Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru wines are red wines made exclusively from Pinot Noir grapes. The Clos de Vougeot vines are planted on shallow, grainy soil with abundant gravel on Bajocian limestone. In the middle (around 250 meters), there is shallow brown soil on limestone gravel, which is more clayey. In the lower part, the soil consists of marl rich in clay and fine silt.

As wines of excellence, Clos de Vougeot wines are the focus of much attention, particularly at Chanson Père et Fils, Domaine Leroy, Château de la Tour, Domaine Méo-Camuzet, and Domaine Joseph Drouhin.
