Grenache

finesse

"Silica 2018, the second vintage of this cuvée, is composed of 90% Grenache from sandy soils, with 70% aged in demi-muids and the rest in concrete eggs. It is richer and fuller than the 2017, harmoniously blending notes of vanilla and cedar with ripe raspberries. It is full-bodied with a creamy texture, ending with a rich, mellow and long finish, with notes of licorice adding further interest. It should age for a decade or more. Bettane & Desseauve

Bettane & Desseauve

Rated estate (2022 guide) 2 stars (A serious and recommendable production, but a little more consistent and uniform than the previous one)

About the estate:

This family-run estate, now in its third generation, produces a wide range of structured wines on some 70 hectares, in a modern and ambitious style that places them among the must-haves of Ventoux. Now managed by Frédéric and Alexandre Chaudière, the vineyard has nine grape varieties grown on clay-limestone slopes at an altitude of 300 meters. The wines are vinified with great care.

Rated estate (2023 guide) Selected (Please note that this guide is a ranking and, as such, all the estates listed in it, even those without stars, represent, in our opinion, the excellence of French production.)

About the estate:

The history of this estate began in the 1970s, when the Chaudière grandparents restored the château and part of the vineyard. Paul and Edith then gave it new impetus by leaving the cooperative and focusing on terroir selection. Since 2000, their sons Frédéric and Alexandre have been overseeing the destiny of this vast vineyard. We are impressed by the stylistic shift in the wines: they have really gained in finesse and flavor, and are a worthy representation of the freshness of the terroir.

About wine:

Made from 90% Grenache and 10% Cinsault, all grown on sandy soils, Silica 2018 was aged mainly in demi-muids. Kirsch, ground herbs, white pepper, graphite and garrigue notes transport us to a medium-bodied to full-bodied Grenache with lots of character, without harshness, great purity and a beautiful finish.
