Bettane & Desseauve

(Notes from the 2012 vintage)

L'Acacia du Jonc Blanc is the result of a meticulous, grain-by-grain selection of overripe grapes. Tiny yields and natural, sulfur-free fermentation produce a powerful, full-bodied, and complex wine. A true standout in the Bergerac appellation!

Rated wine (2015 guide) 14/20 (2012 vintage) (Good wine)

Winery rated 1*Star (A serious, recommendable production, consistent with what one would expect from its appellation(s))

About the estate:

Isabelle Carles and Franck Pascal, who moved to Vélines in 2000, chose to produce pure, sulfur-free wines that are both easy to drink and fruity—wines that are meant to be enjoyed. Certified biodynamic since the 2011 vintage, the 19-hectare estate has always been run according to the principles of organic farming, in order to preserve the environment and their health. They have done well, because without falling into the trap of natural wines, whose fermentation processes can get out of hand, they produce a lovely, fairly consistent range of wines, crafted according to terroir, without technicality, in the Burgundian style.

Wine rated (2015 guide) 17/20 (Vintage 2012) (Great wine)

Rated estate (2021 guide) 1*Star (Up-and-coming stars or quality winemakers producing good wines; you won't be disappointed when tasting the wines from these estates)

About the estate:

Located on clay-limestone soil overlooking the right bank of the Dordogne River, this estate has become one of the driving forces behind the revival of Bergerac. Isabelle Carles and Franck Pascal produce lively, pure wines with intense flavors and great freshness, which they offer at very affordable prices. The reds are sulfur-free and made without additives, even at bottling. This approach is masterfully executed: after aeration, the wines remain clean and well-structured, with perfect, natural acidity.

Well-balanced. Aromatic without being overpowering, with lovely freshness—a very well-made wine.

Unfortunately, this producer's white wines are unfit for consumption: strong aromas of acetaldehyde = apple = oxidation.

Very fruity (apple...), quite pleasant, even if at times it feels more like drinking fruit juice than white wine!

A pronounced reduction. Maybe a little too organic?
