Vosne-Romanée
The vineyard of Burgundy is renowned for its famous division into “climats,” an expression of a delineation and understanding of the terroir that is unique in the world, and it is perhaps in Vosne-Romanée that this approach is best embodied, with climats that produce wines which, for enthusiasts and connoisseurs, are true legends.

Great wines that inspire dreams

In the town of Vosne-Romanée, located in the part of the vineyard known as the Côte de Nuits, there are several “climats” classified as “grand cru,” the highest and rarest appellation level for Burgundy wines. These “climats” have names that evoke a sense of legend: Romanée-Conti, Romanée-Saint-Vivant, Richebourg, to name just a few. The wines produced from these vineyards—all red—are among the most renowned in Burgundy and around the world. The bottles, produced in very limited quantities, sometimes sell for several thousand euros. That is why, for any wine lover, Vosne-Romanée is every bit a pilgrimage destination. It is also where Henri Jayer worked—a winemaker who, until his death in the mid-1980s, revolutionized winemaking methods in Burgundy and produced wines of unparalleled texture and depth. It was also he who, in the commune of Vosne-Romanée, purchased what was then nothing more than a barren wasteland and transformed it into a vineyard known as Cros Parantoux—now classified as a Premier Cru—another legendary and rare wine that sells for a fortune. A plot that was cleared at the time using dynamite, such was Henri Jayer’s faith in this terroir.

A terroir that borders on perfection

Soil diversity is Burgundy’s greatest treasure, and it is once again at its finest in Vosne-Romanée. The soils are predominantly limestone, with clayey marl, in successive layers that provide the ideal conditions for Pinot Noir, the king of grape varieties for the red wines from Burgundy, a unique terroir. This geology, combined with an easterly exposure and a temperate to slightly continental climate, produces grapes that develop into small, highly concentrated berries with a perfect balance between acidity and sugar content. The Vosne-Romanée terroir It can be described as blessed by the gods; more accurately, it is a true gift of nature, used sparingly by humans, much to the delight of wine lovers.

Complex and delicate wines

Vosne-Romanée is a paradise for Pinot Noir, so the appellation produces only red wines. If the Vosne-Romanée Grand Cru are not affordable for everyone and are hard to find, a Burgundy wine from Vosne-Romanée, as a commune-level appellation, is in itself already exceptional. A Vosne-Romanée wine It has a very pure ruby color and an incredibly complex nose with aromas of strawberry, raspberry, blueberry, and blackcurrant. On the palate, the tannins are present and offer great length without being harsh. They blend seamlessly into the velvety texture of the wine, further enriching the aromatic palette with spicy notes. A Vosne-Romanée 2018 is a fine example of its appellation. This was a very sunny vintage, and the relatively high yields also resulted in highly concentrated wines with a balance that allows them to age beautifully over time. The aging potential—which is naturally high within the appellation—can easily exceed ten years. Whether enjoyed now or later, a Vosne-Romanée will always live up to expectations.
