Bettane & Desseauve
Wine rated (2014 guide) 14,5/20 (Good wine)
Winery rated 1*Star (A high-quality, recommended wine that lives up to what one would expect from its appellation(s))
About the wine:
Harvested when very ripe and aged in acacia barrels, this blend of Sauvignon and Sémillon is rich and indulgent, with a slight hint of sweetness on the finish, yet still fresh.
About the estate:
Isabelle Carles and Franck Pascal, who moved to Vélines in 2000, have chosen to produce pure, sulfur-free wines that are both easy to drink and fruity—wines meant to be enjoyed. Certified biodynamic since the 2011 vintage, the 19-hectare estate has always been managed according to the principles of organic farming, in order to preserve both the environment and their health. It was a wise decision, for without falling into the trap of natural wine—where fermentation runs wild—they produce a lovely, fairly consistent range, crafted by terroir, without technical fuss, in the Burgundian style.
Guide des Vins Gault & Millau
Wine rated (2012 guide) 18/20 (Outstanding)
About the wine:
This wine has won us over twice over with its exceptionally powerful aromas and rich, full-bodied texture. It is simply incredible in its richness, its sun-drenched fruit, and its vitality... It is simply bursting with life.

Rated estate (2021 guide) 1*Star (Up-and-coming stars or quality winemakers producing wines of a high standard—you won’t be disappointed when tasting the wines from these estates)
About the wine:
Off the beaten path, the deeply complex Acacia stands out as one of the region’s great white wines, with its intense, invigorating, and unpretentious character, exuding aromas of citrus and green pepper.
About the estate:
Located on clay-limestone soil overlooking the right bank of the Dordogne, this estate has emerged as one of the driving forces behind Bergerac’s renaissance. Isabelle Carles and Franck Pascal craft lively, pure wines with intense character and remarkable freshness, all at very affordable prices. The reds are sulfur-free and contain no additives, even at bottling. This approach is masterfully executed: after aeration, the wines remain clean and well-structured, with perfect, natural acidity.

I served this at a family lunch and nobody liked it: it had a strange aroma and a strange taste. After reading the other reviews, it probably needed more time to breathe before serving. But even with a few more hours, I’m not sure it would have been a wine that a wide audience could enjoy.

Very, very surprising.... even a bit disorienting at first. I saw the previous comment that mentioned a "smell of rubbing alcohol." At first, that’s what stands out.... but when you open the second bottle, you start to appreciate the depth and move past that initial impression. There’s great complexity in this very original wine. It needs to be well aerated before tasting.
