Arbois
Visit Arbois wines embody the excellence of the Jura terroir, offering a remarkable diversity of flavors, from bright white to structured red, via the emblematic vins de paille and vins jaunes. The Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée (AOC) status for the Arbois wines was established by a decree dated May 15, 1936, marking the first time this label was awarded in France. The delimited region for the production of Arbois wines includes the communes of Abergement-le-Grand, Arbois, Les Arsures, Mathenay, Mesnay, Molamboz, Montigny-lès-Arsures, Les Planches-près-Arbois, Pupillin, Saint-Cyr-Montmalin, Vadans, and Villette-lès-Arbois, all located in the Jura.

The terroir of Arbois wines, characterized by a hilly landscape of limestone and scree, is composed of deep, dense, siliceous-clay marls. With 843 hectares dedicated to vines, this appellation is the largest and most renowned in the Jura. Among the region's producers, Domaine Stéphane Tissot stands out for the excellence of its wines from the Arbois appellation.

The 42,000 hectolitres produced annually are divided between dry, lively white wines, with aromas reminiscent of vin jaune, and red wines, which account for 70% of production. There are also vins de paille and vins jaunes, similar to those produced at Château-Chalon. Arbois is also famous for its dry, aromatic rosés, made mainly from the Poulsard grape. In addition to Poulsard, the five grape varieties eligible for AOC Arbois include Chardonnay, Savagnin, Pinot Noir and Trousseau. For more information, visit the Arbois wines website.
