Mâcon

The Mâcon Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée (AOC) is one of the jewels of Southern Burgundy, located in the heart of the Mâconnais vineyards in the Saône-et-Loire department. This appellation, which is distinct from the city of Mâcon, produces wines across 26 communes, covering an area of approximately 3,000 hectares. Thus, the following communes are eligible for the Mâcon AOC: Azé, Bray, Burgy, Bussières, Chaintré, Chardonnay, Charnay-lès-Mâcon, Cruzille, Davayé, Fuissé, Igé, Loché, Lugny, Mancey, Milly Lamartine, Montbellet, Péronne, Pierreclos, Prissé, La Roche-Vineuse, Saint-Gengoux-le-National, Solutré-Pouilly, Uchizy, Vergisson, Verzé, and Vinzelles.

The hills of the Mâconnais shape the terroir, characterized by siliceous, clayey, and sandy soils that are particularly conducive to the flourishing of the region’s signature grape variety: Chardonnay.

Mâcon wines are exclusively white wines renowned for the richness of their aromatic profile, a legacy of Chardonnay’s magnificent expression. Mâcon wines are very approachable and can be enjoyed on any occasion. Nevertheless, they remain high-quality wines that hold their own among the vintages offered by houses such as Maison Verget, Domaine Louis Jadot, and Domaine La Soufrandière-Bret Brothers.
