The Saint-Romain Appellation in the Côte de Beaune

The Saint-Romain Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée (AOC), established in 1947, covers exclusively the territory of the commune of Saint-Romain, within the prestigious Côte de Beaune in the Côte d'Or. This appellation allows wines to specify their specific climat of origin, such as Pouillange, La Perrière, and Sous le Château, among others. Notably, red wines from this appellation may also bear the Côte de Beaune designation.

Terroir and Exposure of the Saint-Romain Vineyard

Located on gentle slopes that benefit from optimal sunlight, the Saint-Romain vineyard thrives on a marl and limestone terroir enriched with clay veins, ideal for growing Chardonnay. The vines benefit from varied exposure, ranging from south/southeast to north/northeast, at altitudes ranging from 280 to 400 meters.

Characteristics and Aging Potential of Saint-Romain Wines

Saint-Romain red wines, characterized by a ruby color and notes of black cherry, evolve after a few years into aromas of ripe fruit, spices, and smoke, supported by fine, elegant tannins. They stand out for their ability to be enjoyed in their youth, while offering an aging potential of about a decade. The white wines have a pale gold color with green highlights, revealing a pronounced minerality on the palate that softens over time to reveal a velvety texture, much like the vintages from Domaine Henri et Gilles Buisson.
