Puligny Montrachet wine

The Puligny-Montrachet wine is an AOC of Beaune coast, located in the Côte-d'Or department. A stone's throw from the great Crus of BurgundyThe village of Puligny-Montrachet is located between the villages of Meursault and Chassagne-Montrachet. Originally named Puligny, the village became Puligny-Montrachet in 1879. Several villages share the production of Puligny-Montrachet wine and are located in Puligny itself or slightly higher up on the Côte. Wines from this region of Burgundy may also be named Beaune Villages CôtesThe only commune covered by the appellation is Puligny-Montrachet. It is also one of the very first appellations for white wines in the Côte d'Or. The village owes its historical fame to the great annual festival known as Saint-Vincent Tournante, organized by local winegrowers.

The Puligny-Montrachet and Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru vineyards are often planted on brown limestone soils, or limestone soils alternating with white clay-limestone marl, sometimes deep or even on hard rock. The clay loam is thick at the top and fine-grained lower down the slope. The Puligny-Montrachet vineyards enjoy eastern and southeastern exposure at an altitude of between 220 and 320 meters. The appellation is perfectly showcased by estates such as Domaine de Joseph Drouhin, Domaine d'Auvenay, Domaine Bouchard Père et Fils, and Maison Louis Jadot.

The wines from Puligny-Montrachet and Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru share with Chassagne-Montrachet the most perfect expression of Chardonnay. Just a few meters from the grands crus, the appellation d'origine contrôlée established in 1937 offers a white wine with a strong personality and high reputation. Red wine production is limited, but this does not prevent it from being of high quality.

Grape varieties

Now a designation, Puligny-Montrachet wines are mainly white wineThe grape variety used for Puligny-Montrachet white wine is chardonnay, while the red wine, produced near the village of Blagny, is made with Pinot NoirThe area under white wine production is large: approximately 210 hectares, including 98 hectares of premier cru. In comparison, red wine requires little area: 0.76 hectares, including 0.05 hectares of premier cru. The four grands crus of Puligny-Montrachet are: Chevalier-Montrachet, Welcome, bastard Montrachet, Montrachet and Bâtard-Montrachet.

Terroir and Characteristics of Wines

Near Blagny, the terroir is favorable for producing good red wine. The wines produced are often rich, full-bodied, robust, or aromatic.

Puligny-Montrachet wine has a golden dress, shiny, with some green highlights that turn yellow with age. The aromas of white wine include notes of hawthorn, hazelnut, honey (when the wine is mature), almond, green apple, fern, and lemongrass. Puligny-Montrachet also has mineral notes. It is a harmonious and smooth wine. Its concentrated aromas linger on the palate. Puligny-Montrachet red wine has a clear ruby color that darkens with age, accompanied by aromas of red and black fruits. On the palate, it is a fruity and tender wine, well-structured, which tends to become fleshy when mature. Its color and taste will therefore leave a lasting impression.

Advice from a sommelier

Puligny-Montrachet white wine should be served between 11 and 13°C, and red wine between 14 and 16°C. White wine can be stored for between 8 and 10 years, and red wine for between 6 and 8 years.

Whether it's a Puligny-Montrachet Whether it is a premier cru or a climat, white wine pairs perfectly with foie gras, lobster, grilled fish and seafood, poultry in sauce (chicken with morel mushrooms, for example), and cheeses (goat cheese, Reblochon, or soft cheeses with a bloomy rind). Red wine, on the other hand, pairs well with meat (pork, poultry, veal, etc.) and hard cheeses (such as Comté).
