Ribera del Duero estate Bodega Aalto
is on Michel Bettane and Thierry Dessauve's list of the world's 100 best wine producers. For thirty years Mariano García was the enologist and the genius behind legendary winery Vega Sicilia. He is considered one of the world's greatest enologists and enjoys immense respect in every country where he has presented his wines and led conferences and tastings.
In 1998 García partnered up with Javier Zaccagnini to create Bodega Aalto with the goal of deepening the potential marriage of the vine with the terroir of the Ribera del Duero to craft a great wine, the fruit of constant, dedicated, unswerving work. In less than ten years Bodega Aalto joined the international elite of wine producers.
Bodega Aalto comprises 42 hectares (104 acres) of vineyards divided among three subregions of Ribera del Duero and seven villages in the provinces of Burgos and Valladolid, in the region's best winegrowing zones. Of these, 32 hectares (79 acres) are planted to Tinto Fino (a local name for Tempranillo) propagated from the best vines in the region. The soils are primarily clay-limestone.
From the beginning, in 2000, the yields have been strictly limited at Bodega Aalto and no effort is spared in protecting the vines' ecosystem. New winery facilities designed by famous architect Jesús Manzanares were completed in 2005. Located in the village of Quintanilla de Arriba, they are equipped with fermentation vats custom made for Bodega Aalto in a truncated cone shape, which allows a great manipulation of the cap for softer extraction. Discovering their two wines, Aalto and Aalto PS, is an explosion of the senses. These spectacular, exhilarating wines are exceptionally concentrated and rich.
