Rully

AOC Rully, an exceptional wine

The Rully appellation d'origine contrôlée is a village appellation in the Côte Chalonnaise region of Saône-et-Loire. It comprises 23 climats classified as Premier Cru. The Rully and Rully Premier Cru appellations may or may not be followed by the name of their original climat.

The nuances between the wines stem from differences in terroir, exposure and altitude, which are quite varied here. Between 230 and 300 meters above sea level, the slopes produce wines that rival the best of the nearby Côte de Beaune. Brown or calcareous soils with low clay content: pinot noir soils. Clay-limestone: for Chardonnay.

AOC Rully red wines are made from Pinot Noir grapes, and white wines from Chardonnay.

White: golden with green reflections, more intense buttercup with age, it excels in aromas of "hedge flowers" such as acacia, hawthorn, honeysuckle, fine elderberry, violet, lemon, white peach and flint. Time brings out honey, quince and dried fruit. On the palate, it's fruity, lively and round, fat and long: all the freshness and polish of marble.
Red: from cherry ruby to dark garnet, its bouquet is composed of black fruits (blackcurrant, blackberry) and red fruits (bigarreau), licorice, lilac, rose petal, evolving towards cooked fruit, half kirsch, half pepper. On the palate, the tannins respect the fruit and the relief of its structure. A few years of cellaring will melt the chewiness deliciously. The slight tightening of the aftertaste is a good sign of persistence and the return of aromas.

Characteristics of the Rully appellation

Some people tend to underestimate the Rully appellation of white and red wines. Rully's ancient vineyards stretch over 200-meter-high slopes overlooking the Saône plain. Producing delicious wines, the soils contain both brown limestone and clay-limestone elements. Château de Rully also boasts 23 premier cru climats. On the slightly lower slopes are climats suitable for producing red wines. Some of these climats are very popular, including : Chapitre, La Pucelle, Les Champs Cloux, Grésigny, Clos Saint-Jacques...

Wine types and their characteristics

Wines differ according to terroir, altitude and exposure. There are three main categories of Rully wine on the market.

White Rully wine

In addition to its golden hue, Rully blanc has green highlights. You can easily recognize this wine by its floral notes (hawthorn, acacia) and mineral notes (flint, gunflint). You can also smell citrus and white-fleshed fruit through this wine. Once you taste it, you'll notice that this wine is generous, dense and full-bodied. With excellent fatness, it offers a certain freshness and liveliness. Best served between 12 and 14°C.

Rully red wine

At first glance, Rully Burgundy red wine resembles wines from the Côté de Beaune region. With its deep red color and purplish shimmer, it is identifiable by its notes of red and black fruits (cherry, blackberry, blackcurrant). It also has floral aromas of rose and violet. Some Rully Premiers Crus red wines are dominated by spicy, furry and leather notes. When you taste it, you'll see that this dense wine shows power and restraint at the same time. For this wine to express its full potential, you'll need to play with time. Before opening your bottle, wait at least three years. Cellared Premier Crus can even wait five years or more. To fully appreciate Rully red wine, enjoy it with game or red meat at a temperature of 16°C.

Rully white premier cru wines

These wines are recognizable by their often deep gold hues. The nose is dominated by floral and mineral notes. Premier Crus can be kept for 5 to 10 years. Best served at a temperature of 13°C. Accompany it with pike quenelles, sauce fish...

Some dishes to accompany Rully wine

The beautiful AOC rully rouge wine has such a special taste with its solid, yet fruity structure. It goes very well with offal such as liver, roast poultry or poultry in sauce, pan-fried kidneys and sweetbreads or sweetbreads in sauce. Some people also prefer it with meat pasta, risottos...
Full-bodied on the palate, rully blanc has a long, fruity finish. This appellation rully can accompany tender meats and fine dishes. Think warm shellfish, fish with white sauce, pan-fried fish, etc. It will also make beautiful poultry in creamy sauce exquisite. It can also be drunk as an aperitif with hard cheeses such as Comté.
