The vineyards of Gevrey-Chambertin and Gevrey-Chambertin Premier Cru are located at an altitude between 280 and 380 meters, facing southeast and east, on thin brown limestone soils (favorable for Premier Crus) and brown calcareous and brown limestone soils.

Gevrey-Chambertin and Gevrey-Chambertin Premier Cru wines are red wines made exclusively from one of Burgundy’s flagship grape varieties: Pinot Noir. The wines of Gevrey-Chambertin offer a robust and powerful structure, well-suited to aging. The finest Gevrey-Chambertin wines can be found, in particular, at the Domaine René Bouvier, at home Louis Jadot, and are offered by Domaine Antonin Guyon or Louis Latour and the Bouchard House Father and Son.

Gevrey-Chambertin, an exceptional vineyard

Although it was already present in the early centuries of our era, the Gevrey-Chambertin gained its reputation during the reign of Emperor Napoleon, who made Chambertin wine, along with Romanée-Conti, his favorite wine, which he would only occasionally swap for a glass of champagne. Located in the Côte de Nuits, the appellation of Burgundy produces only red wines in the communes of Gevrey-Chambertin and Brochon. The appellation area, established in 1936, covers more than 400 hectares and is divided into three distinct appellations: Gevrey-Chambertin Villages, Gevrey-Chambertin Premier Cru, and Gevrey-Chambertin Grand Cru, which together produce more than 16,000 hectoliters per year.

A record number of prestigious wines in Burgundy

The vineyard alone comprises nine grands crus within the appellation of Gevrey-Chambertin wine making it the region in Burgundy with the greatest concentration of wines of this type. Located south of the La Combe Lavaux nature reserve, it encompasses the appellations Ruchottes, Mazis, Clos de Bèze, Mazoyères, Latricières, Chapelle, Charmes, Griotte, and Chambertin. The Gevrey-Chambertin vineyard also boasts an extraordinary total of 26 Premier Crus, among the most renowned in Burgundy.

A delicate yet powerful character

Gevrey-Chambertin wines are deeply colored reds made exclusively from the Pinot Noir grape. Although enjoyable to drink young and fruity, Gevrey-Chambertin wines are primarily wines for aging, and the Grands Crus and Premiers Crus often age exceptionally well. The primary notes of red fruits such as raspberry, blackberry, wild strawberry, or blackcurrant fade with age, evolving into complex aromas of candied and dried fruits, along with hints of leather, licorice, or mushrooms. Aging in oak barrels for a period of 18 months imparts this power to Gevrey-Chambertin wines.

Complex terroirs for full-bodied wines

The limestone soils and marl, rich in clay sediments and fossilized shells, give the wines of theAOC designation elegance and finesse combined with exceptional structure and body. The semi-continental climate of the Côte d'Or, influenced by both the ocean and the Mediterranean, gives the wine an inimitable aromatic subtlety.
