Everything You Need to Know About the Pernand-Vergelesses AOC

The Protected Designation of Origin Pernand-Vergelesses is a village appellation of the Côte de Beaune, in Côte-d’Or. The production area is strictly limited to the commune of Pernand-Vergelesses. In addition to three Grands Crus, it includes eight climats classified as Pernand-Vergelesses Premier Cru: Sous Frétille (white wines only), Clos Berhet (white wines only), Clos du Village (white wines only), Creux de la Net, En Caradeux, Ile des Vergelesses, Les Fichots, and Les Vergelesses.

The Pernand-Vergelesses and Pernand-Vergelesses Premier Cru vineyards cover approximately 130 hectares at an altitude ranging from 250 to 300 meters. Most of the vines face east or south, with a few facing northeast. At the base of the hillside, the vineyard rests on clay-limestone soils mixed with “chaillots” (siliceous residues of flinty limestone). These soils are loose, rich in potassium and phosphoric acid. Mid-slope, the terroir consists of stony limestone soil well-suited to Pinot Noir. At the top, the marly, brown, or yellowish soils are dedicated to Chardonnay. Domaine Chanson Père et Fils has a perfect command of the terroir’s subtleties. As for the color of the soil, it is red due to the iron-rich clays, which provide excellent drainage for the roots.

The yellow hue of the Callovien is reminiscent of the Côte de Nuits. Each year, production of white and red Pernand-Vergelesses can reach 6,200 hectoliters. For your information, the producer classifies its wines into two categories: those designated “Villages” and those designated “Premier Cru” (such as the estate Dominique Guyon 2016). Furthermore, the difference between these two wines lies in the exposure or elevation of the vineyards.

Pernand-Vergelesses Wines

The Pernand-Vergelesses wines and Pernand-Vergelesses Premier Cru These are red wines made from the Pinot Noir grape variety and white wines made from 100% Chardonnay, the two dominant grape varieties in Burgundy. The red wines display a deep ruby color with intense purple highlights. The nose opens with notes of strawberry, raspberry, and violet. As the wine ages, it develops hints of undergrowth and spices. The whites, ranging from white gold to pale yellow, take on golden hues with age. Over time, the aromas of white flowers give way to notes of amber and honey, along with spices.

Red wines

Robust and full-bodied, these red wines are generally well-structured. Thanks to their characteristic aromas of black and red fruits, the quality of this product remains unique. When it comes to reds, Pernand Vergelesses uses strawberries, raspberries, or cherries with distinct floral notes, particularly of violets. After years of aging, animal notes and musk begin to emerge once the fruit is fully ripe and cooked. On the palate, the red wine offers a clean attack combined with firm tannins. Thus, the harmony between acidity and richness ensures this wine ages beautifully.

White wines

As for white wines, they account for approximately 40% of the “Premier Cru” appellations. Generally speaking, they showcase the distinctive characteristics of Chardonnay through aromas of white flowers and, above all, through aging. This category currently includes eight classifications: En-Caradeux; Creux-de-la-Net; Ile-des-Vergelesses; Clos-Berthet; Les-Fichots; Village-de-Pernand; Sous-Frétille; Vergelesses. These various appellations are intended solely for the production of white wines. Although they have aging potential, their longevity depends on their terroirs and cultivation methods.
