Pays d'Oc
IGP Pays d'Oc wines are produced in Languedoc-Roussillon across four departments bordering the Mediterranean: Pyrénées-Orientales, Aude, Hérault, and Gard. Since 1987, IGP Pays d'Oc wines have been rising to the challenges of modern, global markets, promoting their Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) status by adapting the quality of their production methods and vineyards.
Between the steep slopes of the Pyrenees, rolling hills, vineyards, scrubland, and the Mediterranean, the Pays d'Oc offers authentic richness. Enveloped in a Mediterranean climate, the vines thrive on this arid land caressed by the winds. The Pays d'Oc PGI appellation covers some 88,000 hectares, allowing for an annual production of more than 5.5 million hectoliters of wine. Within this production, the wines offered by Domaine d'Aigues Belles, Jean Luc Colombo, Domaine Laroche - Mas La Chevalière, and Domaine La Madura are particularly noteworthy.
The blends of IGP Pays d'Oc wines are creative, and their packaging innovative. They reflect new trends in taste and lifestyle. Everything you need to know about Pays d’Oc wine
The Pays d'Oc region was formerly known as Vin de Pays d'Oc, which came from the regional IGP or Protected Geographical Indication, one of the regions of France where a lot of wine is produced. It mainly refers to the Languedoc-Roussillon vineyards in the southwestern part of France. In general, the grape varieties used in Pays d'Oc wines are white, red, and rosé.
The wines of Pays d'Oc have a rich history
Ranked among the best winemakers, Languedoc producers continue to raise the bar for their products. It is this thirst for progress that has led Languedoc winemakers to focus on producing high-quality wines. Convinced by the quality and potential of the Languedoc terroirs, these winemakers have produced great wines that are recognized nationally. They have turned their attention to producing wines that reflect the true personality of the region, notably wines that are neither heavy nor unbalanced, with a generous character and taste, not to mention numerous aromas.
In principle, the Pays d'Oc region accounts for 60% of French production, or 5.3 million hectoliters of wine. This region has quite unique characteristics, stretching from the Cévennes mountains to the Languedoc plain and the Corbières massif. The soils are schistose, clay-limestone with stony sand, producing complex and varied aromas.
The different types of Pays d'Oc wines
With vineyards covering an area of 90,000 hectares, the Pays d'Oc appellation comprises 90% of the Languedoc's IGP grape varieties. Currently, there are more than 50 grape varieties available to French, European, and, above all, international consumers.
Pays d'Oc white wine
Also known as Sauvignon, Pays d'Oc white wine has deeper or paler yellow hues. When you bring this wine to your nose, it gives off a hint of citrus accompanied by aromas of ivy and boxwood. As soon as you taste this wine, it has a lively attack and a certain freshness.
Red Pays d'Oc wine
Pays d'Oc red wine, or Syrah, has a fairly deep ruby color with purple highlights. The nose is intense, clean, and explosive, with aromas of ripe black and red fruits such as raspberry and blackcurrant. On the palate, this type of wine is supple, powerful, and lively. This product is distinguished by its aromatic persistence. Many winemakers age this product for up to five years to further enhance its flavor. Paired with grilled red meats and charcuterie, Pays d'Oc red wine should be served at a temperature of 16°C.
Pays d'Oc rosé wine
If you have ever seen Pays d'Oc rosé wine, you should know that it is also called Grenache. As its name suggests, it is characterized by its bright salmon pink color. At first glance, you can taste it with your nose and smell its freshness and delicacy. The most prominent aromas in Pays d'Oc rosé wine are redcurrant, strawberry, and blackberry. These fruity notes are combined with spices and flowers. On the palate, this wine has an exquisite texture that is full-bodied, refined, and above all lively. Best served as an aperitif, this wine should be enjoyed at 10°C.
