Juliénas

Juliénas wine, a delicious Beaujolais with a protected designation of origin

Juliénas's winemaking tradition dates back to ancient times. Juliénas It is said to have taken its name from Julius Caesar, and vineyards have been cultivated there since the Gallo-Roman period. Juliénas is likely one of the earliest centers of viticulture in the Beaujolais region.

The château of the main vineyard estate, which still stands today, dates back to the 13th century and has always been used for the production of red wine. These many centuries of viticulture, the passing down of expertise, and a deep understanding of the land have contributed to the prestige of Juliénas.

A region with a rich history and distinct geographical characteristics

AOC since 1938, and holding the European AOP designation, the vineyard of Juliénas is located in the far north of the department of Rhône, on the border of Saône-et-Loire and the Mâconnais wine region. The appellation covers 620 hectares spread across the commune of Juliénas and the communes of Jullie, Emeringes, and Pruzilly. Nearly all of the vineyards benefit from a very favorable southeast/south exposure. Juliénas is also located in a valley that is well sheltered from north and west winds. The resulting microclimate and the altitude of the vineyards, which range from 230 m to 430 m, provide ideal conditions for the grapes to ripen fully. The appellation is divided between granitic soils in the west and sedimentary soils in the east (ancient alluvial deposits).

A grape variety and winemaking process unique to Beaujolais, resulting in a distinctive wine

The Juliénas wine is made exclusively, as throughout the Beaujolais region, from Gamay noir à jus blanc. The Gamay grape variety in Juliénas produces wines with fruity characteristics, evoking notes of red fruits such as redcurrants or raspberries, as well as certain black fruits like blackcurrants. This translates in the bottle to a red color with a multitude of violet and mauve hues. This grape variety, also known as Gamay noir à jus blanc, produces small clusters that are somewhat delicate to cultivate but blend harmoniously with the granite soil found in the Juliénas terroir. These wines also have a relatively high alcohol content, with a robust and powerful character, and pair perfectly with a wide variety of dishes and meals. The fermentation period varies from 6 to 10 days depending on the characteristics of the harvest (vintage, berry size, age of the vines, etc.). The Juliénas wines, well-structured and rich in color, are among the wines of the Beaujolais well-preserved. The Laurent Perrachon Vineyards, Maison Trenel and the Coquard House offer excellent examples of the best the appellation has to offer.
