Juliénas

Juliénas wine, a delicious Beaujolais with protected designation of origin status

Juliénas's wine-growing tradition dates back to ancient times. Juliénas It is said to take its name from Julius Caesar, and vines have been grown here since Gallo-Roman times. Juliénas is thought to be one of the earliest centers of wine growing in the Beaujolais region.

The castle of the main wine estate, which still stands today, dates back to the 13th century and has always been used for red wine production. These centuries of vine cultivation, knowledge transfer, and understanding of the land have contributed to the prestige of Juliénas.

A region with a rich history and distinctive geographical features

AOC since 1938, and benefiting from the European PDO label, the vineyard of Juliénas is located in the far north of the department of Rhône, on the border between Saône-et-Loire and the Mâconnais vineyards. The appellation covers 620 hectares spread between the commune of Juliénas and the communes of Jullie, Emeringes, and Pruzilly. Almost all of the vineyards enjoy a very favorable southeast/south exposure. Juliénas is also located in a valley that is well sheltered from north and west winds. The resulting microclimate and the altitude of the vineyards, which range from 230 m to 430 m, provide ideal conditions for the grapes to ripen well. The appellation is divided between granite soils in the west and sedimentary soils in the east (ancient alluvial deposits).

A grape variety and winemaking process unique to Beaujolais, resulting in a distinctive wine.

The Juliénas wine comes exclusively, as in the whole Beaujolais region, from the Gamay noir à jus blanc grape variety. The Gamay grape variety of Juliénas produces wines with fruity tendencies, reminiscent of red fruits such as redcurrants and raspberries, or even certain black fruits such as blackcurrants. This translates into a red color in the bottle with a multitude of violet and mauve hues. This grape variety, also known as Gamay Noir à Jus Blanc, produces small bunches that are rather delicate to grow, but which blend harmoniously with the granite soil found in the Juliénas terroir. These wines also have a relatively high alcohol content, with a full-bodied and powerful character, and are the perfect accompaniment to a wide variety of dishes and meals. The fermentation period varies from 6 to 10 days depending on the characteristics of the harvest (year, millerandage, age of the vines, etc.). The Juliénas wines, well-structured and rich in color, are among the wines of the Beaujolais good care. The Laurent Perrachon Vineyards, Maison Trenel and Coquard House offer excellent examples of the best that the appellation has to offer.
