Nuits-Saint-Georges
The Nuits-Saint-Georges appellation is a communal appellation in the Côte de Nuits region of Côte d'Or. Since its establishment in 1936, the appellation has covered the communes of Nuits-Saint-Georges and Premeaux-Prissey. This vineyard comprises two parts, one from Vosne-Romanée to the Combe de la Serrée, the other towards the south. This results in subtle differences between the wines. In addition, the Nuits-Saint-Georges Premier Cru appellation has been awarded to 41 recognized climats within the communal appellation, covering an area of 140 hectares and accounting for around half of Nuits-Saint-Georges production.
In the northern part, the soils come from the gravelly silt that has descended from the Côte, and from the alluvial deposits of the Meuzin valley when they are not located at the top of the hillside. In the southern part, the lower silt comes from the Combe des Vallerots (deep, marl-limestone soil), while at the top of the hillside, the soil is rocky. The vineyards are mostly east or southeast facing.
Nuits-Saint-Georges and Nuits-Saint-Georges Premier Cru red wines, made almost exclusively from Pinot Noir, almost always have an intense, dark color. The aromas are powerful and complex, combining cherry, blackcurrant, fur, truffle, and often spices. They are among the most tannic in Burgundy. The harmony between tannins and roundness makes them full-bodied and solid wines. The production of white wines, made from Chardonnay, is almost anecdotal.
In addition to the quality of the terroir, it is also the great estates that have established the reputation of the Nuits-Saint-Georges and Nuits-Saint-Georges Premier Cru appellations , such as Domaine des Perdrix, Domaine Dominique Laurent, Domaine Faiveley, Domaine Joseph Drouhin, Domaine Méo-Camuzet, and Maison Bouchard Père et Fils.
