Nuits-Saint-Georges

The Nuits-Saint-Georges appellation is a municipal appellation in the Côte de Nuits, in the Côte d'Or. Since its establishment in 1936, the appellation has encompassed the municipalities of Nuits-Saint-Georges and Premeaux-Prissey. This vineyard comprises two parts: one stretching from Vosne-Romanée to the Combe de la Serrée, and the other toward the south. This results in subtle differences among the wines. In addition, the Nuits-Saint-Georges Premier Cru appellation has been granted to 41 recognized climats within the communal appellation, covering an area of 140 hectares and accounting for approximately half of the total production of Nuits-Saint-Georges.

In the northern part, the soils consist of gravelly silt carried down from the Côte and alluvial deposits from the Meuzin Valley, unless they are located at the top of the hillside. In the southern part, the lower silt layers originate from the Combe des Vallerots (deep, marl-limestone soil), while at the top of the hillside, the soil is almost rocky. The vineyards are most often oriented toward the east or southeast.

The red Nuits-Saint-Georges and Nuits-Saint-Georges Premier Cru wines, made almost exclusively from Pinot, almost always have an intense, dark color. The aromas are powerful and complex: they blend notes of cherry, blackcurrant, fur, truffle, and often spices. They are among the most tannic wines in Burgundy. The balance between tannins and roundness makes them full-bodied and robust wines. The production of white wines, made from Chardonnay, is almost negligible here.

In addition to the quality of the terroir, it is also the great estates that underpin the reputation of the Nuits-Saint-Georges and Nuits-Saint-Georges Premier Cru appellations , such as Domaine des Perdrix, the Dominique Laurent, Faiveley, Joseph Drouhin, and Méo-Camuzet estates, and Maison Bouchard Père et Fils.
