Nuits-Saint-Georges

The Nuits-Saint-Georges appellation is a communal appellation in the Côte de Nuits, Côte d'Or. Since its creation in 1936, the appellation has covered the communes of Nuits-Saint-Georges and Premeaux-Prissey. The vineyards are divided into two parts, one from Vosne-Romanée to the Combe de la Serrée, the other towards the Midi. As a result, nuances emerge among the wines. In addition, the Nuits-Saint-Georges Premier Cru appellation has been awarded to 41 recognized climats within the communal appellation, covering an area of 140 hectares and producing around half of all Nuits-Saint-Georges wines.

In the northern part of the appellation, the soils are composed of silt and gravel from the Côte and alluvial deposits from the Meuzin valley, when they are not on the upper slopes. In the southern part, the lower silts come from the combe des Vallerots (deep soil, marl-limestone), while the top of the hillside caresses the rock. Most exposure is to the east or southeast.

Nuits-Saint-Georges and Nuits-Saint-Georges Premier Cru red wines, made almost exclusively from Pinot grapes, are almost always intense and dark in color. Their aromas are powerful and complex, combining cherry, blackcurrant, fur, truffle and often spices. They are among the most tannic in Burgundy. The harmony of tannin and roundness makes for solid, full-bodied wines. The production of white wines, made from Chardonnay, is almost anecdotal.

In addition to the quality of the terroir, the reputation of the Nuits-Saint-Georges and Nuits-Saint-Georges Premier Cru appellations is founded on the great estates such as Domaine des Perdrix, Dominique Laurent, Faiveley, Joseph Drouhin, Méo-Camuzet and Maison Bouchard Père et Fils.
