Pernand-Vergelesses

Everything you need to know about the Pernand-Vergelesses AOC

The controlled designation of origin Pernand-Vergelesses is a village appellation of the Beaune coast, in Côte-d'Or. The production area is strictly limited to the commune of Pernand-Vergelesses. In addition to three Grands Crus, it includes eight climats classified as Pernand-Vergelesses Premier Cru: Sous Frétille (white wines only), Clos Berhet (white wines only), Clos du Village (white wines only), Creux de la Net, En Caradeux, Ile des Vergelesses, Les Fichots, and Les Vergelesses.

The Pernand-Vergelesses and Pernand-Vergelesses Premier Cru vineyards cover approximately 130 hectares at an altitude of between 250 and 300 meters. Most of the vines face east or south, with a few facing northeast. At the base of the hillside, the vineyard rests on clay-limestone soils mixed with "chaillots" (siliceous residues of flint limestone). They are loose, rich in potash and phosphoric acid. Halfway up the hillside, the terroir consists of stony limestone soil that is suitable for Pinot Noir. At the top, the brown or yellowish marl soils are dedicated to Chardonnay. Domaine Chanson Père et Fils has a perfect understanding of the subtleties of the terroir. The soil is red in color due to the ferruginous clays, which are excellent for root drainage.

The yellow hue of Callovian thus recalls the Côte de Nuits. Each year, the production of Pernand Vergelesses white and red can reach 6,200 hectoliters. For information, the producer classifies its wines into two categories, namely those named "Villages" and those called "Premier Cru" (such as the estate). Dominique Guyon 2016). In addition, the difference between these two products lies in the exposure or altitude of the vineyards.

Pernand-Vergelesses wines

The Pernand-Vergelesses wines and Pernand-Vergelesses Premier Cru are red wines made from the Pinot Noir grape variety and white wines made from 100% Chardonnay, the two main grape varieties in Burgundy. The red wines are dark ruby in color with intense purple highlights. The nose opens with strawberry, raspberry, and violet. With age, the wine develops hints of undergrowth and spices. The whites, white gold and pale yellow, take on a golden hue with age. The aromas of white flowers give way over time to amber and honey, and more spices.

Red wines

Full-bodied and robust, red wines are generally well-structured. With typical black and red fruit aromas, the quality of this product remains unique. When it comes to red wine, Pernand-Vergelesses uses strawberries, raspberries, or cherries with floral accents, specifically violets. After years of aging, animal notes and musk begin to appear once the fruit is ripe and cooked. When tasted, the red wine has a clean attack combined with solid tannins. The harmony between acidity and richness guarantees this wine a happy maturity.

White wines

As for white wines, they account for around 40% of Premier Cru appellations. In principle, they develop the distinctive characteristics of Chardonnay through the aromas of white flowers and, above all, through the aging process. This category currently has eight classifications: En-Caradeux; Creux-de-la-Net; Ile-des-Vergelesses; Clos-Berthet; Les-Fichots; Village-de-Pernand; Sous-Frétille; Vergelesses. These various appellations are intended solely for the production of white wines. Although they have aging potential, their preservation depends on their climate and cultivation methods.
