Among the Chassagne-Montrachet Premier Cru vineyards, we can mention La Romanée, Les Grandes Ruchottes, La Grande Montagne, Vigne Blanche, Morgeot, Ez Crottes, Les Chaumes, Vigne Derrière, Clos Saint Jean, Les Chenevottes, La Roquemaure...
The broad, beautiful Montrachet hillside brings out the best in Burgundy’s two grape varieties. Pinot Noir and Chardonnay thrive here side by side thanks to the complexity of the terroirs. Large marble quarries form a rocky escarpment. The terroir lies between 220 and 320 meters above sea level; starting from the summit, the soil layers consist successively of steep Raucasian formations, a Callovian slope, and underlying Argovian marl, followed by Bathonian limestone. Depending on the specific sites (locations with distinctive characteristics), the soils range from calcareous and stony to marly or sandier (Jurassic strata).
The production of Chassagne-Montrachet wines and Chassagne-Montrachet Premier Cru is divided between white wines, produced from some 180 hectares of Chardonnay vines, and red wines, covering 120 hectares of the region. The former account for nearly 60% of total wine production, which amounts to nearly 16,000 hectoliters per year. Among this production, the Chassagne-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet Premier Cru wines offered by the Joseph Drouhin Estate and the Roger Belland Estate.
Chassagne-Montrachet: A Vin de Climats
The excellence of Burgundy’s two grape varieties, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, flourishes on a vast and magnificent hillside south of the Côte de Beaune, at an elevation of between 220 and 325 meters. Known since the Middle Ages, “climats” are the names given in Burgundy to vineyard plots shaped by human hands. Each climat has its own unique characteristics. The wine produced takes the name of the climat where the vines grow. This ensures the distinctiveness of each wine, as nothing is left to chance—from the plots’ exposure and soil type to the surrounding vegetation. This tradition, passed down from generation to generation, has given rise to the world-renowned Chassagne-Montrachet. The viChassagne-Montrachet is available in Chassagne-Montrachet (white) and Chassagne-Montrachet Red.Chassagne-Montrachet (white)
Made from the Chardonnay grape variety, the Chassagne-Montrachet (white) is a French wine with an Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée (AOC). This wine is the perfect companion, pairing wonderfully with white meats, fine poultry, and veal in sauce. Fish is no exception. Chassagne Montrachet Blanc 1er Cru pairs effortlessly with lobster, spiny lobster, and foie gras, depending on your preference. Montrachet wine is best served between 12 and 14 degrees. These are generous, powerful, and full-bodied wines. Its color is golden with subtle green highlights. On the palate, it reveals all its aromas: acacia and hawthorn. Floral notes of honeysuckle and verbena. Not to mention its signature flinty note, characteristic of its terroir. Smooth, opulent, and intense, the Chassagne Montrachet Blanc can age for some twenty years while retaining all its vibrancy.Chassagne-Montrachet Noir
Made from the Pinot Noir grape variety, the Chassagne-Montrachet Noir also holds an A.O.P. designation. Serve this wine with dishes such as roast lamb or grilled pork. It will delight the palate when paired with a curry. Pheasant pairs beautifully with a red Chassagne-Montrachet Premier Cru. These are wines meant for aging. They are rich and powerful, with a vibrant, deep purple color. On the palate, they release aromas of red fruit and a spicy note. The recommended serving temperature is 14 to 16 degrees. These white and red Chassagne Montrachet wines are aged in barrels or tanks, allowing the unique character and qualities of each vintage to shine through. In the Burgundy region, the winemaker is a craftsman of the land, which he cultivates like a garden, making each wine Chassagne-Montrachet an unforgettable culinary experience. For more information, visit the website at Chassagne-Montrachet
