Good Reasons to Choose Minervois Wines

The Minervois appellation covers an area of nearly 15,000 hectares. With one-third of this area planted with Minervois AOC vineyards, this appellation—recognized in 1985—is one of the largest in the Languedoc-Roussillon region, enabling it to offer a wide variety of wines.

Thus, alongside a production of high-quality white and rosé wines—which, however, remains marginal compared to total production—the Minervois appellation primarily offers red wines ranging from the most fruity, meant to be enjoyed young, to the most complex, which require some aging to fully express themselves. The grape varieties used for these red wines are Syrah, Grenache, Carignan, Cinsault, and Mourvèdre.

The Minervois appellation is located northeast of Carcassonne and northwest of Narbonne, in an area backed by the Montagne Noire. The soil consists of pebbles, schist, sandstone, and limestone, alternating with areas of marl. The Mediterranean climate promotes the ripening of the vines. Although thunderstorms can sometimes be violent, the grapes dry quickly thanks to the wind, which blows almost constantly.

The red wines from Château Festiano, Château l'Amiral, and especially Château d'Oupia are sure to win over wine lovers who haven't yet tasted wines from the Minervois region.

What Makes a Minervois Unique

First of all, the Minervois wine region is located in an area where the varied climate and diverse soil types are well suited to the primary grape varieties grown there, namely Carignan, Grenache Noir, Syrah, and Mourvèdre. These factors ensure the quality of the wines produced, which are generally categorized into three types: red, white, and rosé.
The Minervois AOC is best known for its specialization in red wine production, which is why its production breakdown is so lopsided: 3% white wine, 13% rosé, and 84% red.

Enjoying a red Minervois is never a mistake

The wine’s color is an intense garnet or ruby, which takes on a slightly brick-red hue with age. In fact, this red wine has an aging potential of 2 to 4 years, which can extend to 8 to 10 years for exceptional vintages. It is primarily this aging potential that accounts for its intense, balanced flavor, as well as its velvety texture on the palate. On the nose, it releases aromas of blackcurrant and violet. Spicy notes such as vanilla and cinnamon are often present. Red wines pair well with appetizers and, above all, with cheese.

An overview of two vineyards in the Minervoise appellation

It is important to mention two iconic estates in the Minervois region: Château Maris and Cantaussel.

Château Maris: This 45-hectare vineyard in Livinière was acquired by Robert Eden. The area is particularly recommended for a getaway, offering the chance to admire the beautiful landscape blanketed in vines during the summer months. It is also renowned for producing fresh wines of unquestionable quality. The estate is fully committed to biodynamic farming. In fact, it has received Biodyvin certification, further adding to its list of accolades.

Domaine de Cantaussel: This Minervois estate is best known for its organic wine production. It is located in a very sunny area, one of the region’s hottest and driest terroirs. Hence its symbolic motto: “Domaine de Cantaussel: nothing but organic—the vines, the sky, and the garrigue.”
