Château Clerc Milon
was acquired in 1970 by Baron Philippe de Rothschild, who undertook the task of restoring the estate to its former rank of Cru Classé. Thanks to Baroness Philippine, this renowned château is now also equipped with technical facilities and reception areas worthy of its reputation.
The Château Clerc Milon property covers 40 hectares (99 acres) of vineyards situated in the northeastern part of the Pauillac appellation, mainly on the mountain of Mousset, which overlooks the Gironde. The vines are cared for according to integrated viticulture, with full respect of the environment and phytosanitary products used only at a strict minimum. The vineyards are observed just as meticulously and the parcellary selections just as exacting as at Château Mouton Rothschild.
The new winery at Château Clerc Milon was custom-made for the property's mosaic of parcels, in order to allow the greatest flexibility when the grapes arrive during the harvest. As at Mouton Rothschild, the harvest is done entirely by hand and collected in 12-kilogram crates.
A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, Château Clerc Milon undergoes an élevage of 16-18 months with 40% new oak. Humidity in the cellars is kept consistently at 80% thanks to ultrasound humidifiers; the temperature is also kept constant, at 14-16°C (57-61°F). The resulting wine, a beautiful marriage of gravel and clay-limestone terroirs, is powerful, tannic, fruity, and harmoniously structured. It boasts all the elegance of the greatest Pauillacs and has great aging potential.
